Aviator Hotel - Farnborough Airport, UK

Designed by Hamilton’s Architects a London practice with a long background in the commercial sector www.hamiltons-london.com

The project was developed with Dakota Hotels and delivered a unique hotel regenerating a former RAF Officers Mess site. This 4 star hotel has conference facilities, breakfast bar/patisserie, destination restaurant, gym and lounges with a mix of rooms ranging from double/twin bedrooms to executive suites. Director at Hamiltons, Robin Partington says, “The striking form of the building responds to the client’s brief for a luxury hotel that serves the local business community whilst responding to the context of the airfield, complementing the new cluster of buildings that signal the long term regeneration of the area.”

Aliva UK supplied 600sqm of Aliva Alucovering and a bespoke Aliva backing structure on either end of the building.

The hotel is at the end of the runway and so it was not practical to put the plant on the roof as would normally be the case on most hotels, instead all the plant was located at the ends of the building on a steel frame, and clad, for aesthetic reasons only, in Aliva Alucovering.

The architect chose Alucovering 01 flat panels in RAL 9017 around the base and at the top of the plant areas and Alucovering 03 profiled panels in RAL 9006.

BR Hodgson Ltd installed the facade and were very pleased with both the Alucovering and the Aliva bespoke designed backing structure which they had not used previously. The backing consisted of a series of vertical floor to floor aluminium windposts fixed with U shaped brackets onto the steel structure at slab level. The alucovering then fitted directly onto these vertical box section posts.

Dave Duplock MD of BR Hodgson said “Aliva did an excellent job on the design which was very thorough whilst being easy to understand, their schedule was 100% accurate”  he went on to say “I would recommend Aliva and their systems to anyone, Alucovering is a great product and I am suggesting it to my own clients as something that is a fully engineered architectural product whilst being within the budget of all clients”

Aliva Bespoke Backing Structure always has built in tolerance to work within the building tolerances and allow a perpendicular facade no matter how imprecise the building structure is behind.

The client and architects are delighted with the appearance of the facade; the Aliva Bespoke backing structure does an excellent job in perfectly aligning all the Alucovering tiles and giving a clean crisp facade. Go and see for yourself! Its just off the M3
