We shape our buildings, and afterwards our buildings shape us

The Sadler Building - Oxford Science Park, UK

The Sadler Amenity Building houses a bar and brassiere, as well as many meeting rooms.

Designed by Hamilton’s Architects a London practice with a long background in the commercial sector www.hamiltons-london.com

Aliva UK supplied 400sqm of Aliva Stone backing structure behind this Mirage Ceramic Tile Facade on three sides of the building. Most ceramic tiles suitable for facades are 1200x600 module size. However, standard tile sizes were not large enough for this projects requirement. Instead1780x1250mm Mirage 30mm thick slabs were used and cut to size in Italy prior to delivery.

The mirage slabs were 30mm thick and rather than use undercut anchors to fix the tile secretly, Aliva’s Stone 1 fixing system makes the most of this thickness and fixes into a precut kerf  7mm wide by 18mm deep cut in the top and bottom of the tile. The Aliva Stone 1 backing structure is flexible enough to easily accommodate almost any size tile.

LMC Ltd installed the facade for Dane Architectural Systems Ltd and were very pleased with the flexibility of the Aliva Stone backing structure which they had not used previously

Aliva Ceramic Backing Structure has built in tolerance to work within the building tolerances and allow a perpendicular facade no matter how imprecise the building structure is behind. U Shaped brackets are supplied from 60 to 155mm as standard, so almost any cladding zone can be achieved. Most brackets have a tolerance of +/- 20mm as standard when used with our vertical Aliva Stone 1 profile.

Choosing an 8mm horizontal joint allows tiles to be replaced should there be the need and we have a method statement and special pin for facilitating this.

Rod Milicevic of LMC said “Aliva Stone 1 system was very flexible as well as quick and easy to install, we would use this system again and again.”

The client and architects are delighted with the appearance of the facade; the Aliva Stone 1 backing structure does an excellent job in perfectly aligning all the tiles and giving a clean crisp facade.
